His Excellency Amit Kumar, Ambassador of the Republic of India,

The Honorable 임종성,

Vice President of the Korea-India Parliamentary Friendship Group,

Ambassadors, Distinguished Guests, 

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening. Namaskar!

It is my honor to be here to celebrate the Republic Day with you tonight.

First of all, let me extend heartfelt congratulations to the people and the Government of India. I am delighted to be part of this event that celebrates the day when the Constitution of India, the foundation for a democratic republic, came into effect. 

It is also gratifying to note that our two nations are both proud of our democratic systems and traditions. And they are also serving as a strong foundation for our multi-faceted partnership.

Last year, we celebrated the 50^th anniversary of our diplomatic ties. Yet the trade and cultural exchanges between our peoples date back thousands of years. 

Our common cultural and historical heritage such as Buddhism and India’s contribution during the Korean War are shining examples of our deep rooted friendship.

Based upon this long friendship and shared values, and thanks to our joint efforts, there have been tremendous progress in our bilateral relations over the last 50 years. 

Distinguished Guests,

During last year, which marked the golden jubilee of diplomatic ties, there have been active exchanges and cooperation between our two nations. 

President Yoon had two bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Modi on the occasions of the G7 and G20 Summits respectively.  On December 10^th, the day on which our two nations forged diplomatic ties half a century ago, the two leaders exchanged letters and issued congratulatory messages. These numerous high-level exchanges well demonstrate the close and continued strategic bilateral communication.

Many Korean companies are actively investing and producing in India, contributing to the “Make in India” initiative. This month, it was announced that Hyundai Motors will invest 1.1 trillion Korean Won in Maharashtra. 

We are also closely cooperating in the defense industry. The K-9 Vajra howitzer, produced in Gujarat, is a shining symbol of our defense industry partnership. And I look forward to smooth progress in the procurement of the second batch of Vajra. 

Science and technologies cooperation such as space are also an integral part of our Special Strategic Partnership. And we are working on the launch of the trilateral technology dialogue with the U.S. this year. 

Distinguished Guests,

At this critical juncture when we are heading into the first year after the 50^th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, we need to work together to forge a shared vision for our future. Based on our shared values and aligned visions for the Indo-Pacific, I believe we should work together to promote freedom, peace and prosperity in the region and beyond.

First of all, Korea and India should promote freedom in the region and more broadly. We will closely cooperate bilaterally as well as through collaborations with like-minded partners including the 3^rd Summit for Democracy that Korea will host this year.

Secondly, Korea and India should work for peace and stability in the region and beyond. Based on historical bonds during the Korean War and active bilateral cooperation in defense and defense industry, we will promote our partnership on regional security - including North Korea, cyber security and multilateral exercises.

Lastly, we should work together for mutual prosperity and contribute to global economic development. The complementarities between our two economies are a valuable basis for our partnership for future prosperity. Furthermore, cooperation between our two countries in critical and emerging technologies is gaining more significance.

The 50^th anniversary that we celebrated last year is an important milestone that ushered in a new era in Korea-India relations. I firmly believe that the Special Strategic Partnership between our two nations will move even further forward in the 50 years to come. 

Thank you once again for inviting me today, and let me once again congratulate your Republic Day. I look forward to working together with you in making our Special Strategic Partnership even more special as we prepare for another five decades of journey together.

제1차관, 인도 공화국의 날 리셉션 축사

임종성 한-인도 의원친선협회 부회장님,

주한외교단 및 내외 귀빈 여러분,

안녕하십니까. 나마스까르!

오늘 저녁 인도 공화국의 날을 여러분과 함께 기념하게 되어 영광스럽게 생각합니다.

우선 인도 정부와 국민들께 진심 어린 축하의 말씀을 전하며,

민주공화국의 기초인 인도 공화국 헌법이 발효된 날을 기념하는 오늘 행사에 함께

하게 되어 기쁩니다.

한국과 인도 우리 양국은 모두 우리의 민주주의 제도와 전통에 대해 자부심을 갖고 있고, 이러한 민주주의 제도와 전통이 양국 간 다각적인 협력관계의 강력한 기반이 되고 있습니다.

내외 귀빈 여러분,

작년 우리 양국은 수교 50주년을 기념하였습니다.  하지만 우리 양 국민들 간 교역과 문화교류는 수천 년 전으로 거슬러 올라갑니다.  불교와 같은 우리 공동의 문화 및 역사적 유산과 한국전쟁 당시 인도의 기여는 양국 간 깊은 유대관계를 잘 보여줍니다.

이러한 오랜 우정과 공유 가치를 기초로, 또한 우리 모두가 함께한 공동의 노력 

덕분에, 한-인도 양자관계는 지난 50년 동안 엄청난 진전을 이루었습니다.

내외 귀빈 여러분,

한-인도 수교 50주년이었던 작년 한 해 동안 양국 간 활발한 교류와 협력이 전개

되었습니다.

윤 대통령과 모디 총리께서는 G7 및 G20 정상회의 계기 두 차례 양자 정상회담을 

하였습니다.  양국이 반세기 전 수교한 날인 12월 10일에는 양 정상께서 축전을 교환하고, 축하 메시지를 발표하였습니다. 이와 같은 다수의 고위급 교류는 우리 양국이 긴밀한 전략적 소통을 이어가고 있음을 잘 보여줍니다.

많은 우리 기업들이 인도에서 활발하게 투자하고 생산하며 “Make in India” 정책에 기여하고 있습니다.  이번 달에는 현대자동차가 마하라슈트라 주에 1.1조 원을 투자할 

예정이라는 소식이 발표되기도 했습니다.

방산 분야에서도 양국 간 협력이 지속되고 있습니다.  구자라트 주에서 생산되는 

바지라(K-9) 자주포는 양국 간 방산협력의 상징과도 같습니다.  바지라 1차 사업에 이어 2차 사업도 원만하게 진행되기를 기대합니다.

우주를 비롯한 과학･기술 분야 협력도 양국 간 ‘특별 전략적 동반자 관계’의 필수적인 부분입니다.  올해에는 한국-인도-미국 3국 간 기술대화 출범을 위해서도 협력하고 있습니다.

내외 귀빈 여러분,

한-인도 수교 50주년 이후 첫 번째 해를 맞는 중요한 시기에, 우리는 양국 간 공동의 미래 비전을 마련해 가야 할 필요가 있습니다. 

공유 가치와 인태지역에 대한 유사한 비전을 토대로 한-인도 양국은 역내 및 국제

사회의 자유, 평화, 번영에 기여하기 위해 함께 노력해야 합니다.

우선, 한국과 인도는 역내 및 국제사회의 자유를 증진시켜야 합니다.  양자 차원은 

물론 대한민국이 올해 주최하는 제3차 민주주의 정상회의 등 유사입장국 간 공조를 통해 우리는 긴밀하게 협력해 나갈 것입니다.

둘째, 한국과 인도는 역내 및 국제사회의 평화와 안정을 도모해야 합니다.

한국전쟁 당시의 역사적 유대관계와 국방 및 방산 분야에서의 활발한 양자 협력에 기초하여, 우리는 북한 문제, 사이버 안보, 다자간 훈련을 비롯한 역내 안보 관련 협력을 

더욱 강화해 나갈 것입니다.

마지막으로 한국과 인도는 상호 번영을 촉진하고, 글로벌 경제성장에 기여해야 

합니다.  양국 간 상호보완적 경제구조는 미래 번영을 위한 우리의 파트너십에 있어 

귀한 자양분이 될 것이며, 더 나아가, 양국 간 핵심･신흥기술 분야 협력도 

그 중요성을 더해가고 있습니다.

내외 귀빈 여러분,

작년 우리가 함께 기념한 수교 50주년은 한-인도 간 관계에 있어 새로운 시대를 여는

중요한 이정표가 되었습니다.  저는 향후 50년 동안 양국 간 ‘특별 전략적 동반자 

관계’가 한층 더 진전될 것이라고 확신합니다.

오늘 저를 초청해 주셔서 감사드리며, 인도 공화국의 날을 다시 한번 축하드립니다.

여러분들과 함께 양국 간 ‘특별 전략적 동반자 관계’를 더욱 특별하게 발전시켜

향후 50년의 여정을 함께 열어가길 기대합니다.
